let us not forget that our lives are made up of mostly the everyday. everyday joys, everyday trials, everyday failures, everyday triumphs.
as a friend put it last night, our lives are not “done” once we reach a certain point. and it is not only the major events that matter. for, who we are is mainly composed of who we are in every little moment.
i want people to see that the little things matter and that every day is a new day.
i’m trying not to be consumed with the turmoil that surrounds me.
as always, i’m trying to enjoy and appreciate right here, right now.
i fail easily, but every day is a new day.
i also want to make it clear that i don’t believe art, music, literature, and beauty are “leisure” activities reserved for “free time.” as a people, we would cease to function without these things, for beauty is an integral part of how we were designed. our appreciation for creation and beauty are not part of any lesser self. perhaps my own obsession with these things clouds my opinion. but i just don’t think we understand how much we each value these things even if we call it “leisure.”
You know I love this post because you know how I lead my life. Does that mean I don’t have terribly stressful days? Of course not, but overall I enjoy what God has given me and He gives me strength to get through the hard stuff.
I have to tell you that having Nadia has really brought this home to me since she takes DELIGHT in the littlest things.
Example: spray bottle for water = endless entertainment.
And your friend is very wise. Life doesn’t end when you finish college, get married, have a kid, get a job and so on.
I love you!
tahni – i like your points here about art, in all its various forms, not being solely leisure. i agree. to diminish art down to pure entertainment, or to something we simply ease into and out of like a big fat rocking chair, also diminishes the life altering power of art and the artist. not to mention, seeing art as solely leisure also reduces art to something we do as opposed to something we are / are becoming.
i’m enjoying your site here.
